Would You Pay $165 for Makeup?
The girls on my Knot board have been raving about this local makeup artist. She's won countless awards, has done photo shoots, TV and magazines and I believe she's worked with a celeb or two. She does truly amazing work. I always look at the pictures of the brides that have used her and the before and afters are amazing.
She'll make you look like a superstar, but still keep you looking like you. You'll be Red Carpet ready after you sit in her chair.
However, she's 5 just for the bride! That does not include the trial, which is . You do get some little extras in there, like eyelash application, blotting papers and your tub of lipstick. She also uses airbrushed foundation. But, that's still a lot of money.
But, she does amazing, amazing work. So, in a way, it seems worth it. I'm just wondering, would you pay that much? Again, she's a highly accomplished makeup artist. We're not talking about someone from the MAC counter at Macy's or the stylist at your salon.
I'm just wondering other people's opinions.
P.S.-I love wearing makeup, but I'm terrible at applying it. So, I have to have a professional do it.

If it were me, I would try to rationalize it like this: if you managed to stay significantly under-budget on your dress and other attire, go ahead and get the make-up done. If you’re cringeing about the amount you spent on your dress, best to do your make-up yourself.
It seems like you really want this, so try to see if there’s somewhere else you saved money so you don’t have to feel guilty about it.

if you tell your makeup artist that it’s for a wedding, most of them will charge almost this much, so you might as well hire someone amazing!

no that’s way too much. there’s no need for a makeup trial imho. you could go to any dept store makeup counter the day of the wedding and get a great job done. or a high end salon in your area for $50-60. but no more than that and no trial. I’ve had my makeup done for 3 weddings I was either a guest or bridesmaid at, and I looked great in the pictures. once I went to the estee lauder counter and once I went to red door salon.

Nope…. that is ridiculous! Do you plan on having a lot of close up shots? If so maybe… but if you are just having the typical wedding day pictures done I think it is a waste of money.

Hah! I wouldn’t… What is the obsession with having professionally-done makeup on your wedding day, anyway? Seeing as how most women out there do their own makeup every single day of their lives, it seems like they would probably be the ones who could do their wedding makeup best. I mean, obviously when they met their future husbands they were wearing makeup they’d applied themselves, so why isn’t that good enough on their wedding day too? Honestly, I don’t get it. I’m doing my own, using the same products I use every day. And I’m putting the money I saved on a makeup artist towards something my guests actually care about- like the bar tab, for instance…

If she’s that good, HECK YEAH! You would do anything to make your day special. It all depends on how rich you are right now. If you got some extra dough, maybe. It’s up to you. If you want every one to say "WOW! You look REALLY good!’ DO IT!

I think if you can afford it and you can justify spending the money then go for it. Personally 165 is not in my budget but if my heart was set on getting this woman to do my make up I would find a way to cut costs somewhere and save up the difference to make myself feel beautiful and special, dont expect your wedding party to pay this for their make up tho.

for one day, no, absolutely not. yeah, i may look good on that day, but god, i can think of a million wedding related things i could spend that $165 on that would be much more worthwhile.
i happen to have 3 friends who went to school for hair and makeup tho so i might be a little biased

For … "She’ll make you look like a superstar, but still keep you looking like you. You’ll be Red Carpet ready after you sit in her chair."
YES, I would pay that much for a service that is that good and also comes highly recommended.
I am an absolute makeup klutz so I’d gladly pay for a well qualified expert to do my makeup for me.

i wouldnt pay that much, but from what i understand thats an average price

I have 2 opinions on this.
1. There is NO WAY I would pay that much.
2. If you’re dropping a couple grand on a photographer (we are not) - why would another $165 to look your best in your photos make any difference?
So, personally, I’d say it’s outrageous, but I think a lot of wedding-related prep is also outrageous. Then again, consider the price of pretty much any spa treatment out there, or a masterful set of highlights, or other things you can do that make you look good - I can’t see any difference. IF you have the money for it, I’d say, treat yourself.

I definitely would not pay that much. A family friend offered to do my make-up for free and I was hesitant to even do that! I love doing my own makeup. I do it everyday… it’s usually a pretty natural look, but I love special occasions when I can make it a little more special. I wanted to look a little more special on my wedding, and I wanted my makeup to show up in pictures, but most importantly, I wanted to look like myself!
I’m sort of assuming that this woman does makeup to make you look like a movie star, or a model on a magazine- they wear a LOT of makeup and while the airbrushing thing looks good in photos, it looks pretty ridiculous in person. I’m thinking of Kim Kardashian as a good example of that… she just looks so airbrushed! I don’t want to look like that, and I would worry that my makeup would be extremely obvious in pictures with other people (with normal makeup). So no- I would save that money for something else and do my own. I was happy with my wedding makeup and it looked great in pictures.

This is your wedding day and you’ll have the pictures for a lifetime. I think $165 to look extra stunning is well worth it. If you have the extra money for that (which I’m guessing you do or you wouldn’t even be considering it), go for it. I definately wouldn’t go to the mall to get my makeup done. Who wants to drive to a mall, get through the crowds, sit in a hot, badly lit, store for an hour? Then get to the ceremony? I’m certainly getting my makeup done by a real makeup artist. All I have to do now is find an artist that I like. I don’t suppose yours is in the Northern New Jersey/New York City area?

search out make up artist for you wedding and see what kind of wedding packages they offer and set up a test to see if you like what they have done 165 does seem like to much unless she is going to do air brush which is what I want but if they are doing a basic application I wouldn’t do it I don’t care how good they are you are only going to wear it for one day

Sounds like she is worth it. It’s all about supply and demand. She can get away with charging that because she knows she does a good job and people will pay it.
I’m a wedding photographer and my highest package is $5k. I know a guy who everyone wants and he charges $10k and people pay it just to have him at their weddings.
So do you think it’s worth it? If I seen her work I would be able to tell you but I would pay for it if she was worth it.

Airbrushing foundation? I would not want to use that much makeup on my wedding day! Nor use liquids anymore. You are supposed to look like yourself, only better, not like you were photoshopped in person! And in no way I would pay that much.
