Why does my dog keep pooping on the rug?

My Newfoundland is house trained and has never gone to the bathroom in the house until recently. He had a bout of diarhhea and pooped and peed in the house when he was sick. I cleaned it up and now he poops ( no pee) in other places on the very large rug. I will find poop clear accross the room so I know its not because I haven't cleaned up the smell from the previous times! I have tried to let him out first thing and right before I go to bed, but it isn't helping. He seems to find a fascination with the rug. Please help!
It is a large oriental rug in the living room ( will not throw it away!). I have been confining him at night but after I let him out in the morning and go take my shower, I find a present! He does not have diarhhea anymore. I have been cleaning the rug and the smell is gone. He may be trying to tell me something, maybe it's an attention thing, any other ideas?

    Retrain him with positive reinforcement.

Sounds like you’re not giving him enough attention, and this is his way of asking for it.

Your dog sounds like it has lost control of it’s bowels for some reason. You might have to confine the dog in an area that can easily be cleaned up each time this happens, instead of constantly on the rug. The rug is eventually going to have to be thrown out and that gets expensive, especially if it is wall-to-wall. You have to get back to basic training again with house breaking after you make sure there is no medical reason he can’t hold it.

Good question. If my dog doesn’t get taken out in time, that is where she poops too. If you find out can you let me know.

Shampoo the rug to get the smell completely out and then confine the dog somewhere at night where he can not get to that rug. Be sure to praise him for going to the bathroom outside and just keep working with him.

My pets only do this to tell you something is wrong, maybe you should take the dog to a vet. My cat did this, she had a kidney infection. To clean up the smell, use white vinegar.

Well your not giving him/her the dog much attenion and not training the dog or you need to train the dog again my dog use to do that and i gave her more attenion and rtrained her and now she does not pee on a rug any more or ask a vet how to stop it from peeing on a rug =)
