i own a carpet store and most time people will go to my dumpster and get carpet that we have pulled out of somebodys house and then have it professionally cleaned.
Go dig in the dumpster behing the Carpet Shop in your town or where they sell carpet. Sometimes people get good carpet that way for free. Done it before.
Go to a redneck bar…hahaha, no seriously though…you can find cheap if not used carpet at any carpet store. They normally have backstock or used carpet for good prices.
find places that do destruction see if they can help, when tearing down old buildings and offices there are plenty of carpets and such that get left behind
Go to any carpet outlet. When they install new carpet they rip out the old. Then just throw it in their dumpster. You’d be surprised how good a lot of it is. And it’s free
Look in the local newspaper, call a carpet store and see if they have pieces of any kind of carpet. Take all different colors and textures and make a carpet of many colors. Or see if there is a thrift store in town.
Stop in at a carpet store and stalk around to you see someone purchasing. Ask them if you can buy or have their old carpet. Put an ad in the paper. Stick notes up at the local stores. Some people would be glad for you to get rid of the old carpet before they get the new.
Go to a thrift shop or Dig in the dumpster of a carpet shop, Also ask the carpet shop If they have any extra carpet you could take off there hands or that they are discontinuing and that you are two college guys that need some rugs. Haha …LOL. Also lots of people throw out carpet everyday. Chances are Carpet is real cheap at carpet shops. Carpet One Check adds in the newspaper, or you could go in person.
Sometimes people just leave it on the curb to be picked up after they get new carpet installed…I wouldn’t be shy and would take it!
When I lived in the dorms, I would check out Home Depot for sales and stuff. One year I bought a 10′ x 15′ all purpose carpet, gray, tightly woven (stuff you’d see in office buildings) for 20 bucks. Depending on how big your room is, you could get like two of them and put them side by side, and that would only be 40 dollars. You could also ask a store like Home Depot or Lowes if they are discarding old samples or such…piece enough of them together and you’d have an original looking carpet!
Many communities have bulk trash pick up days. Find out when/where they are in your community and drive the neighborhoods for cast-outs. Also if you can wait, you will find an abundance of thrown out carpet and furnishings at the semester move out dates around any college dorm complex.
Go to a carpet store or even a Home Depot/Lowes type store that sells carpet and ask for the remnants. These are pieces off the roll that were extra or miscut for a room and had to come back. They love to try and sell that stuff just to get rid of it so they dont’ have to throw it away. Remember to ask for the "remnants".
Apatment complexes change out their carpet when new tenants move in, check with apartments complexes around the first of the month to see if they have any old carpet they are getting rid of.
When I was a kid, the daycare I went to used to get the old carpet sample squares that the carpet store didn’t need anymore, then they would duct tape them all together to make a big carpet. It was actually kinda cool.
