Ripped up old carpet on stairs to basement, better to use linoleum or carpent again to cover stairs?

I have two small children so my mother and husband think it would be safer to have the carpet. I think it would look nice and easier to clean to have the linoleum covering, and I don't think carpet is that much safer. Does anyone else have a preference? If so why?

i would say that if the basement is a full basement and used for entertaining/living then i would go w/ carpet. but if it’s only used for parking/storage/laundry i’d go w/ the linoleum b/c it’s cleaner, healthier and doesn’t get as worn down as carpet. plus it’s easier to sweep than vacuum carpet on stairs.

I prefer a tile or linoleum - its cleaner. Carpets hold in dust and stains and other allergens.

I would agree with the saftey aspect. Espcially if you have small kids. If you dont want the look of carpet is putting in hardwood an option for you. It will have better traction then linoleum and more attractive the that and carpet.

With kids, I would never use any kind of tile or linoleum on the stairs. The surface is too slippery. I’d keep the stairs bare wood or carpet it.

Carpet! If you have children then that’s the only way! It’s safer yes but much easier to maintain. And a lot easier to install. It also helps hold in the heat. And my kids don’t always like to ware something on their feet. Who wants to step on to cold flooring! And the way it looks is all in your own preference!

How about just putting the carpet in the middle of the stairs and leaving the sides natural wood, that way the kids are safe plus it will look nice. I would think the linoleum would be too slippery and you would hate for someone to fall down the stairs.
