Our house has carpet in the bathroom too. It sucks. The main problem is around the toilet because guys stand to pee. You could learn to sit when you go or do what I did, place a throw rug around the toilet (special ones made just for this) then when it gets dirty just pick it up and wash it.
You could even use matching throw rugs to cover the rest of the carpeting too.

Not really, however if you are not going to be getting the floor area too wet, you could cover it w/ 3/4" plywood and glue vinyl sheeting over the plywood but there would be no way to seal the edges where it meets the walls, around the toilet and there would be a lip at the threshold.
It would look ugly but be functional. If I were you I would ask the land lord if you could remove the carpet and use vinyl tiles at your expense if you really do not like it. This would be the correct way to do it…

Honestly I would ask the owner if you could put something down because your worried about water damage, tell them you would cover the cost and show them what you want to put down before you did it, homeowners are frequently ok with improvements.

We rented a house like that too. YUK. Unless you talk to your land lord almost any thing you put down without taking up carpet will look tacky. It may also cause problem if not sealed to wall and fixtures. since bathrooms collect so much moisture from steam and splash , moisture will go to edges of flooring and mildew. Talk with your land lord and say that carpet looks nice but you don’t feel you can properly clean it. ask if you can take it up? Do they know what the flooring is like under carpet? it may be worse.Without their permission they may dock your deposit.
