Is it my boyfriend or my new appt my cat hates?
My beautiful persian mix has been having major behavioral problems. When ever my boyfriend comes over he (the cat) sits in one spot and won't move, pisses on himself, and growls at my boyfriend. Sometimes he (the cat) will hide and not move. This has only started since I moved into a new apartment. The other cat loves my boyfriend and this cat used to also. My boyfriend swears up and down that there is no reason for the cat to dislike him now. The vet thinks it is was a repressed memory of abuse by a man (he is a shelter cat). Any thoughts or suggestions? I'm really sick of cleaning my carpet, but don't want to get rid of the cat or the boy.

Based on some similar experiences I’ve had, I’d say it is definitely that the cat does not like the boyfriend. These situations don’t tend to improve on their own. You could try discussing with your veterinarian the possibility of putting the cat on anti-depressants/anti-anxiety medication (they have them for cats now) which, I’ve been told (never tried on my own cats though) sometimes help with behavioral issues. If your cat only does this behavior when the boyfriend is over, for whatever reason, the cat has decided it does not like your boyfriend anymore. In my experience if cats don’t like someone, there’s a reason (unless they are the kind of cat that just doesn’t like anyone at all). Unfortunately, you may find you have to choose between the cat and the boyfriend if this doesn’t improve. But try talking to your vet.

Try to put the cat in one room away from the boyfriend at first, until the cat gets used to the new apartment and then every other time the boyfriend comes over start to slowly bring the cat out of the room until the cat is comfortable with both the apartment and the boy.
