I know this should be simple! It's frustrating!?





A rectangular Persian carpet has a perimeter of 160 inches. The length of the carpet is 18 in. more than the width. What are the dimensions of the carpet?

    let x = length = 18 + y
    y = width = unknown

    Perimeter = 2length + 2 width = 2x + 2y = 160
    –> 2y = 160 - 2x
    –> 2y = 160 - 2(18 + y)
    –> 2y = 160 - 36 - 2y
    –> 4y = 124
    –> y = 31 is the width

    x = 18 + y
    x = 18 + 31
    x = 49 is the length

    to check:
    perimeter = 160 = 49(2) + 31(2)
    = 98 + 62
    = 160

    There you go. I hope its clear…

    perimeter (2l + 2w) = 160

    2l + 2w = 160

    substitute w + 18 in for l
    2(w + 18) + 2w = 160
    2w + 26 + 2w = 160
    4w = 134
    w = 33.5

    l = w + 18 = 33.5 + 18 = 51.5

    your dimensions are 33.5 x 51.5

    160 - (18 * 2) = 124
    124/4 = 31
    31+18 = 49
    49 x 31 = 1519

    L = 31 +18
    …………………..L = 49 in.

    Check
    2W + 2L = 160
    62 + 98 = 160

    Sure couldn’t ride on a flying carpet that small.
