I am taking up some old carpet in my son's bedroom. He has old tile underneath. What can I do to tile?
I do not have the funds to replace with carpet at this time. I need an idea of what I can do at the cheapest expense or if there is anything I can do without having to lay carpet or re-tile.

What kind of tile?? You need to be careful if it is asbestos tile (looks like vinyl tile but is usually brittle). You should not disturb it. You cannot dispose of it without a permit.

clean up the tile and throw a rug over it

if the tile is in decent shape but just ugly the best option is to paint it… however if it is in poor shape then you may want to consider re-tileing anyway…

Check local carpet stores for "remnants". They will often be far cheaper than new because they are leftovers and they just want to get rid of them. If the room is small, it should be no problem. Another option would be to simply buy some inexpensive ‘throw rugs’ and use those. Also, check on thrift stores. Just remember, carpeting of ANY sort will be extremely heavy. Make sure you have help. Carpet need not be professionally installed with padding and Wall to wall techniques. You can just throw it down and let it settle.

Floor paint is a little more than regular paint, but it is clean colorful and can be fun to do ….also a fraction of the cost of new flooring and paying me to install it !!!

Decoupage the floor. Use the picture pages from old magazines.
Be sure to use several coats of polyurethane to protect your "art".
