I have had excellent luck with a product called "Nature’s Miracle" which not only gets rid of the stain, but totally eats the enzymes that carry any lingering odor. There are products that will get rid of the stain, and all the odor that a human can smell, but you have to really get rid of 100% of the smell to avoid the temptation on your dog’s part to claim theat spot as the "potty."
This product is available at most of the big pet chain stores (PetCo, PetSmart, etc.) for $8-$20 depending on which size bottle you buy. I think the full gallon jug costs so much less per ounce, and is useable for other "organic" carpet problems (vomit, food, etc) that it’s really the best buy. I have wool-blend wall to wall carpet that has not suffered a bit from its use.
This stuff saved my sanity and carpets many times during potty training. Everyone I have recommended it to has thanked me for the tip.
Its questions like this that make me glad I bought a rug shampooer. If you have to do it by hand, dab at it with a towel weted with soap and water. Use something like shout only as a last resort and only use cold water for wool.
