How do i get the smell out of carpet?

The carmet just smells gross and musty and I want to get it to smell good again. It is a tight woven burber carpet and fairly old. Im sure it wont smell like new but i want it to smell good in this bedroom again. Any suggestions as to what is the best way to go about this? I dont want to wash the carpet because i think that would make it worse.
I dont want to get new carpet as the house will not be lived in much longer maybe a month more. I cant take the carpet up it is glued down no carpet padding. It is indoor carpet though and cant really be watered down. I was thinking some sort of powder or something to put on it.

Sprinkle the entire carpet with baking soda. Spread it around with a broom. Allow the Baking Soda to sit on the carpet at least an hour (overnight is even better). Then vacuum it up.

You’ll need at least 3 pounds of baking soda, but baking soda is cheap.

Baking soda eliminates 99% of all odors.

There are powders you can sprinkle on, that will temporarily put a perfume down that will max the odors, and Breeze helps some, as well. But you might want to consider pulling the carpet up and changing the padding, as well as cleaning and disinfecting the floor underneath. If the carpet is small enough, you might want to consider leaving it outside as long as possible (days if you you’re not expecting rain) so it can "air" out while you clean the floor and replace the padding.

Carpet odor that is not overwhelming can often be dealt with effectively by using a common household item: baking soda. The baking soda should be distributed in an even layer on the carpeting and allowed to stand for several minutes. This method allows the odor to be absorbed by the baking soda. By vacuuming up the baking soda, the carpet smell is eliminated and the carpeting is left with a fresh and clean smell.
