How can I remove hardened adhesive/padding from under an old carpet?

In my bedroom, the carpet is very old and MUST GO! I ripped a corner up and there is a hardened substance, I'm not sure if it's the padding that is under or the adhesive. I think the hardwood floors underneath are in good shape, proving we can get this hardened stuff up. If not, we'll be getting the wooden floors refinished or getting a new carpet. However, I'd like to try to take it up myself first. Any ideas? I need something that will do the job, but not ruin the floors.

Try a scraper and a heat gun.The heat gun should loosen the glue and then you can scrape it off.If the floors are wood, be sure to put an old tee shirt over the scraper so you don’t scratch he wood

Try Goof Off, it might work. Use a plastic scraper. You can also try paint thinner but you will definitely have to refinish the floor, you may have to do that anyway.
