Can i do something to old carpet instead of replacing it?

I'm buying a house and i'm really cheap. The carpet is in good condition, but it is sooo ugly. I was wondering if u can put bleach in the steam cleaner and bleach it lighter color? Or if there is anything else i can do with ugly colored carpet? thanks

You can give it a good cleaning and see if that helps. If that doesn’t work you can have someone come and dye the carpet a darker color.

Nope, you most likely would end up with blotchy spotted colors if you tried to bleach it. You wouldnt be able to keep it consistant, if you tried to dye it, you would most likely cause too much water to enter the pad below and cause rotting, and some moisture issues which would lead to mold. Tear it up and start over, or buy some flattering curtains.

You’re not cheap - you’re economical and that’s good! You said the carpet is in good condition - that’s a great start. Have you placed all your furniture in the home yet, as doing this may cover up a lot more of the floor than you think. Once your furniture is in place and you are still not happy with the exposed carpet, perhaps you could strategically place mats, a rug, or runners to hide the still visible carpet. Failing any of these suggestions you will have to pay up for someone to dye it, or just grin and bear it.
